Caleb is 9!

Caleb is 9 years old!  Caleb is such a joy to be around, and he has grown and matured a lot this year. Despite the unusual circumstances we have been living within the past several months, Caleb has been so flexible and resilient and we couldn't be more thankful for this loving, curious, funny boy. Caleb loves reading, and he always has many questions on his mind. He plays very well with his siblings and is a great big brother. Caleb loves watching movies and any opportunity he gets to play video games. He also loves playing outside, riding his bike, being with friends, and exploring his surroundings. Caleb is a growing boy and he surprises us with how much he eats. He has even started sleeping in until about 7:30 - 8:00 the past few months. If you know Caleb, that is very late!
We had a great day celebrating Caleb, it was a day filled with fun things for him.  His day started with summer camp (we have been very fortunate to be 3 weeks into a modified camp at the Embassy), and after camp he had a few friends over for dinner and cake.
Make a wish! You are special today, and every day.
Brotherly love.
Caleb's best friend, Sean. They have been friends for the past 4 years, and his family leaves Jordan in the coming week. Caleb said he is thankful for technology so he can keep in touch with his friends.
It's crazy to think that Tes has been with our family since Caleb was only 2 years old! For his birthday, she made pancit, a traditional Filippino noodle stir fry dish that is served for birthdays and other happy occasions.
After his friends went home, he opened birthday gifts. The boys like to watch a video game commentator named Preston, and Benjamin got him a Prestonplayz hoodie (and we got Benjamin one too).
He received lots of nice gifts from family and says thank you!
It was a special day celebrating a special 9 year old. Happy birthday Caleb, we love you!

Baby Shower

A couple of weeks ago, we hosted a baby shower at hour house, for our good friends who were having their third baby. They have two girls and are having a little boy.
We planned having a bigger shower a couple moths ago, but due to COVID there has been gathering restrictions, and we had a to postpone it. Since we can't have big gatherings, we kept it to our office co-workers and their spouses.

I hardly took any pictures, but we had a great time celebrating their family's upcoming arrival, eating Lebanese food (in honor of her being Lebanese), and lots of yummy desserts that people brought.
Nadine is a dear friend and we are so excited for their family.
On July 8, at 5:45pm, Miles Emmanuel Graves entered the world. He was 3.05kg, had lots of hair, and he is just perfect.
Congratulations on Mile's safe and healthy arrival!

Scandinavian Forest

One day last week we took the boys hiking at the Scandinavian Forest, which is about 30 minutes outside of Amman. It had been a while since we had been there, and we have enjoyed hikes there over the years. It was a beautiful day and there was not a person in sight the entire time we were there.
Start of the hike.
The backside of the trail has even more beautiful views.

Little explorers.

Pretty flowers in bloom.
Heading back to the beginning of the trail.
The sign reads: The Jordanian Scandinavian Society, it is prohibited to enter. The boys are pointing to bullet holes in the sign, and proceeded to find several spent pistol and shot gun shells nearby.
Many people come here to enjoy the scenery, but sadly many also leave their trash behind. But if you venture beyond the trash to the back of the trail, the views are quite beautiful.

Let's go fly a kite!

Last week, the boys and I went with some friends to the Citadel downtown to fly kites. It was a beautiful day  and the the boys were excited to see some of their friends.
It was a clear day and we had a great view of the city.
The old roman amphitheater is towards the center.
Hardly anybody was there. On the way in they took our temperatures and made us wear masks to get in. One of our friends did not have her mask, so she had to buy one. It was a scam because inside nobody was wearing one.

Our friend brought two kites. One flew great and the other did alright.

From the Citadel, you could see some kites really high up in the air over downtown. We couldn't tell where they were being flown from.
After kite flying, we ate a picnic lunch then explored a little bit.

It was a fun day with friends!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to this man who we love so much!  Nathan is a devoted and loving father to our three kids, and we are so thankful for who he is, all he does, and his selfless love for our family. Whether it is making up challenges for the boys, teaching them to do projects in the yard or around the house, wrestling, reading, or cuddling and watching movies, Nathan does it all and he is their hero. We love you Nathan!

Desert Rose Holy Land Designs

Last weekend Nathan and I visited an olive wood shop in town, to pick up wedding favors for a friend who had to leave a few months ago due to COVID.  This shop, which is also Christian ministry, produces a lot of the beautiful olive wood products in the area. This past year Caleb's class visited for a field trip, and I know one of the ladies running the place, but had never visited before. The shop had been closed for 3 months and had just re-opened a few days before, and they were all happy to get back to work. They said that the majority of their customers are tourists, so like most places here, they are hurting financially from the pandemic. The people working there were really happy to see visitors, and one of the men working there gave us a great tour, explaining the process of how they make their products.

They purchase thousands of pound of olive wood twice a year from Jerash, a city about 45 mins north of Amman. They had it stocked up in piles in the lower level of the facility.
Next, they cut the wood into smaller pieces to prepare it to make products.
This is a copy machine. The artist puts a piece of wood in each nook, this one makes eight pieces. The artist guides the machinery to carve the center piece according to the design he wants, and as the machine suggests, the other segments copy what the center piece is doing.
The man behind the bag is scooping up wood chips that were created during the shaving and carving of the wood. He comes in twice a day to bag the thicker and smoother wood pieces, and uses them on farms. The thicker pieces of wood are used in chicken coops and it helps keep the eggs warm after they are laid, and the smoother wood is used for horses in the winter. It keeps the ground soft and warm so they horses don't have to walk on the cold ground. The remaining wood that is not usable, they give to people to burn to keep their homes warm in the winter, and they keep some for the same purpose. This area is a giant garage with no insulation, and the man said in the winter time it is very warm with the wood burning.
This is an example of some pieces that came off of the copy machine.
Next, they bring the items upstairs and the ladies do the sanding, additional carving, and coating with lacquer.
The machines you see in the distance are giant sanders and buffers that are welded to a metal pole. The ladies wore masks with very thick layers of cloth between the mask and their mouths because as you can expect, it gets very dusty in there.
Pieces waiting to be dipped in lacquer.
By the time we got back upstairs and I asked if it was ok to take pictures, the ladies were all taking their lunch break. There was about 4 ladies working that day. I asked how they find people to work there, and they said they like to hire people based on recommendation, which usually means family members. They are all Muslim men and women making the products. The people working that day had been employed there between 2-15 years!
I wish I took pictures of some of the finished products, but I forgot. If you have received olive wood from us in the past, it was made by this shop. Here are the beautiful bowls that our friend had made for their wedding. We were glad to have the opportunity to visit the shop, speak with some of the people working there, and learn about all the hard work put into making each one of these products by hand.
