Smoky Mountains National Park

After leaving SW Virginia, we headed to Smoky Mountain National Park. We arrived in Tennessee mid-day, and drove straight into the park for a few hours. Every national park we visit has a very different feel. This park seemed a lot more foresty and there were a many rivers and creeks. We drove across the North Carolina border and to the top of Clingman's Dome, the tallest peak in NC at 6,643 feet.  After parking, we walked up to an observation tower...that was the easiest tallest peak hike! Caleb even gave mommy a kiss before heading home.

That evening we went to dinner and discovered that Caleb loves oranges. He would not let it out of his hands. He ate lots of food on this trip, pretty much anything we ate, he tried.
Our hotel was walking distance from the park, so after dinner we walked along a trail that followed the river. Caleb had so much fun that day he did not sleep since morning, so he took an evening siesta by the river before bed.
The next afternoon we took Caleb swimming for the first time. He had a lot of fun in the pool and hanging onto daddy. It cracked him up when we went underwater and popped up fast. I think we will need to get our blow up pool ready for summertime!
Our last full day at the park we did a great hike called Cucumber Gap and Little River Trail. The hike started in an area of the park where people used to own vacation homes. In the early 1900's before Smoky Mountain Park was established, people had homes out in the country. Once the property became parkland in 1934, the homeowners lobbied to keep their homes, and they successfully did so until the 1990's. Below are the remnants of many of the now dilapidated homes.

Our little hiker started the hike with a nap. He really is comfortable laying on the padded shoulder strap, despite the way it may look!
This hike was completely in the forest and shaded the entire way. We crossed a couple of small streams, and had a friend of the forest follow us for a short while.
At the end of Cucumber Gap trail, we picked up the Little River trail for the rest of the hike.
Caleb was waving at the trees and sky, it was so cute! Daddy joined in too. Like father, like son -:).
We stopped by a stream for a lunch break and to let Caleb out for a while. He had fun crawling on the rocks, dipping his feet in the river, and playing with the plants and moss.
Future rock climber!
20 weeks pregnant and thankfully feeling great!
Ending the day with another well-deserved nap! Caleb was a super trooper and we had a fun day.
Next, we drove further into the park to a place called Cade's Cove. Cade's cove was a pioneer settlement from the 1820's, and was occupied by over 100 families. The cove displayed many aspects of pioneer living, from the grit mills, blacksmith, old fashioned kitchens, homes, and churches. This place was in the middle of nowhere, so I can't image how tough life must have been for the people living here  over 150 years ago. They had each other and pooled their resources, and successfully lived in the cove for over 100 years.

Thanks for following our trip -:).

Grayson Highlands State Park

Last week we took a family vacation to southwest Virginia and Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee. We had a fun week hiking and spending time together. Caleb was a great traveler and he really enjoyed being in the backpack carrier for the hikes.
Our first stop was in Abingdon, Virginia to visit Grayson Highlands State Park, home of the tallest peak in Virginia - Mount Rogers at 5,728 feet. Grayson Highlands Park, as its name suggests, sits at over 4,000 ft elevation. There was absolutely no signage along the 1 hour drive to the park until we turned into it...our kind of place! We set out to do the 8 mile Mount Rogers hike on Monday morning. It was a cooler (mid 60's) and overcast day, which was perfect hiking conditions.
We hiked through open meadows, forest, and rocky paths, it was beautiful with the spring flowers blooming. The park is known for their wild ponies and we got an up close and personal look and feel of them.

Halfway through the hike, it was getting very sunny and hot, so we decided it was best to turn around. It was a very exposed trail, and we didn't want our little hiker to get too much sun on our first day into the trip. It would have helped if he wore hats, but he gets so upset when we put one one these days. We were able to get the hat on once he fell asleep -:).
On our way home, we drove through a really cool town called Damascus, VA, and we stopped there for lunch and relaxed in the park. The town had a lot of character and it had a little river running through it and a long bike path called the Virginia Creeper Trail that went into NC. It's only a few hours from home, so we plan to get back again for a bike ride with the kids in the future. Next stop....Smoky Mountains!

Virginia Vineyards

Last weekend Tom, Erin, and Jenna came to visit. What better thing to do on a hot Virginia day than visit some of our local wineries...especially when you have a pregnant lady to drive everyone around! Moving from California, Tom and Erin have us beat on vineyards, but we sure have them beat with the summer heat and humidity, and it was in full effect that day.
First we went to Naked Mountain vineyard. Nathan used to pass this vineyard on his bike rides. Good thing he did not stop for tastings those days -:). We had a picnic outside and then went inside to sample the wine. Next we went to Deleplane Cellars. This vineyard was very modern and the tasting room was fully enclosed by windows and a beautiful view of the rolling hills. We sampled more wine and their homemade bread, and Caleb and Jenna had fun enjoying the attention of the people around them.

When we got home, Jenna had fun with Twix. She cracks up when we sees her, I think there may be a kitty in their future. We hung out on the deck in the afternoon. Caleb played with toys and Jenna ate Erin's delicious deviled eggs with the rest of us. She was pretty tired and almost fell asleep on the table, it was cute. After a nice nap, we gave the kiddos a bath and they headed home.
It's been fun having them close by and we look forward to another fun day soon!

Our Little Walker

Caleb is on the go-go with his walker. He was so happy to be home from our vacation that he walked back and forth between Nathan and I for almost 10 minutes! Stay tuned throughout the week for blog posts about our trip.
